Dance is often mixed with the competitive world of discipline and rigorous practice which overlooks dance as a therapeutic artistic expression and nurturer of self esteem. Dance has many benefits which is why it is a major part of Sarvam Shakti’s curriculum. Sarvam foundation equips young adolescent girls with dance skills to give them a means of expression that empowers them physically and mentally. This confidence instilled in the students of Sarvam has now been proven through a comparative study conducted by volunteers from The Shri Ram College of Commerce.

The study sought to investigate certain variables (Impact exposure and self esteem) of the beneficiaries of Sarvam Shakti Project and Non- Sarvam children. The sample consisted of 30 adolescent girls in the age group 11–16 years, which consisted of one experimental group(15 Shakti girls training in Indian classical dance of 1.5 years) and one control group(15 Non Sarvam girl from a neighboring community and similar strata as Shakti girls). The study used the following tools: Self Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, M. 1965) and qualitative Interviews.

The results revealed that Sarvam students scored 19.73 and non Sarvam students scored 16.33 inferring that Shakti’s intervention through dance training has led to a higher self esteem of the children.

Self esteem is nothing but self worth or self respect which describes how much a person likes or dislikes themselves. Positive and high self esteem in young children is very important which in turn shapes their future and personalities.

The positive impact of Sarvam Shakti is far reaching and not only limited to dance. This study proves Sarvam Shakti’s curriculum to be effective and holistic in its true sense.
