Ghungroo is a crucial and indispensable ornament in Indian Classical Dance, and it is the foremost instrument a dancer must put on before rehearsing or performances. While practicing and executing any foot movement, it amplifies and enhances the rhythm created by the Ghungroo. They not only accentuate footwork but also assist the dancers to maintain the Taal and Laya of the music. It is so much more than just a decorative ornament, playing the same role intensifying rhythmic movements as jewelry and makeup intensify expressions and eye movements.

In Kathak, ghungroos play an especially crucial role, where the Gurus and disciples worship the ghungroos on Guru Purnima. It was an exhilarating and ecstatic moment for the Kathak batches of Shakti when 42 pairs of ghungroos were generously donated by the ‘Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company- The Drishtikon Dance Foundation ’ on World Dance Day 2022.

The girls are fortunate enough to be taught by the senior disciples of the aforementioned dance company, and they feel joyful and elated at being appreciated at the hands of their teachers. They are grateful for the donation bestowed, as it is an achievement for the disciples to be presented ghugroos by the Guru.

The girls enjoy practicing and performing with ghungroos much more as they are utterly delighted to hear the sound they produce with their own feet. They pointed out that now with the help of the sound, they have been able to master coordination with their peers, and that using this essential ornament has bolstered their confidence as performers.
