The Shakti Juice recipe!
Health and performing arts go hand in hand- atleast they should. Too often though, we ignore holistic health in favour of busy schedules, especially as travelling artistes with erratic schedules. The girls at Sarvam Shakti, though they hail from very economically marginalized backgrounds are trained to eat surprisingly well giving their limited budgets. Even though they are children, the avoid white sugar at all times, except for the rare chocolate or two a year that we give them. They are taught to avoid junk food like a pest. Instead of spending the Rs. 10 on Kurkure or a Pepsi, they buy two bananas instead:)
This is the juice that is made for them on a regular basis inhouse by the Chief Empowerment Officer of Sarvam Shakti- Mrs. Hemangi Bhatnagar, herself a former National level Badminton & Kho-Kho player!!
The health of Shakti girls is amazingly good in comparison to their peers who are not in the Sarvam program. Entire habits at home have changed as have habits of neighbors of Shakti girls. A girl recently told me of how her father who usually loves to bring a 1 L bottle of Fanta on any festival day, instead made a 1 L bottle of home-made neembu paani using powdered jaggery:)
