Women’s Hygiene Day 2022
On 28th May, the Shakti girls at Vasant Kunj were visited by 2 members from a non-profit organization on account of World Hygiene Day. As they sat in a circle hurdled around each other curiously, they were given a brief talk about the importance of personal hygiene.
The girls were made to understand that menstruation is perfectly normal and not a topic to be hushed down or spoken about in whispers. They were advised to not carry any shame regarding their cycle or experiences. The members told them about the possible infections that accompany using a cloth during menstruation and emphasized on the importance of using sanitary napkins instead. The girls were also told to take personal hygiene very seriously and visit a doctor in case of any infections or unease without hesitation.
They were given both organic and commonly used inorganic sanitary napkins, while being educated about the different ways both of these napkins decompose. The plastic pads take years and years to decompose in a dump; however the organic napkins are made of rice, tomatoes and carrot and hence are safe for the environment as well.
The girls enthusiastically interacted with them and were happy to learn more about their personal hygiene.
